Another consideration was the layout. The height difference between the garden and deck required a well-planned transition, ensuring the staircase was comfortable to climb and visually balanced from both levels.
Work began by stripping out the existing staircase to reveal a clean slate. Once the area was cleared, new treated timber stringers and supports were measured, cut, and constructed directly on-site. Building from scratch allowed the structure to be tailored precisely to the space, ensuring everything was aligned and fixed securely.
To make the climb more comfortable and to add architectural interest, a hardwood landing deck was introduced at the halfway point. This mid-level platform not only breaks up the journey but also acts as an attractive focal feature when viewed from the garden.
Safety and aesthetics were equally prioritised. Custom handrails and balustrades were crafted and fitted, creating a secure boundary without compromising the open feel of the outdoor area. The choice of materials—durable hardwoods and treated timbers—means the staircase is prepared for year-round exposure, from summer sun to winter rain.
The finished staircase is a significant improvement in every respect. It feels strong and steady underfoot, meets modern safety expectations, and enhances the look of both the deck and garden.
